Ryoan-ji 「Rock Garden」

The Ryoan-ji rock garden is one of the most famous gardens in Kyoto. It was built in 1450 by Hosokawa katusmoto who was deputy to the Ashikaga shogun.

The ho-jo(方丈) was building in 1499.The area is rectangular and contains 15 small and large rocks lying there, but it’s impossible to see all the rocks from any angle.

In the north garden is tsukubai(washbasin) nestled amid pabbles and camellia bushes.「吾唯知足」 means “Learn only to be content,” a concept well in line with Zen ideals.
